It tempts me to ...Wonderful review of the book.....
It tempts me to buy it, if for the "camp" quality of it......
Let us face it----and I used to be a MAGNIFICENTLY Obsessed fan of Joan when in college (1980-1984) and I still follow her person every time I can but without the ICONIZATION of the past--- Joan always LOOKED exquisitely "patrician" and usually aristocratic, but when she opened her mouth (perhaps privately, as I have read------and, THANK GOD!---not publicly) she could be loud, vulgar and quite lowly. I have met dozens of people like that. They LOOK SOIGNEE, but once they start talking the whole effect disappears---no matter that they may be wearing Balenciaga....Certain things are immediately remembered----when she moved to that sad white building on Lexington Avenue (a total "no no" for such a superstar) her decor (in greens and yellows----and the barren look of the place was hideous. (and more than a little sad...)..AND she kept her sofas covered in PLASTIC!!!.... I would assume she does NOT advice that!!... As well, all those paintings (how many?) that that mediocre lady "artist" painted of hers (with the huuuge eyes) were simply grotesque------ but she had them positioned in a very obvious way for everyone to admire, which is another "NO NO"!! One refrains from such vulgarities.....After having lived at number ONE East 70th (?)----right across from the Frick Museum ----a magnificent address----and so "old-money" that the co-op board always insisted on using the street address although they could have used "5th. Avenue!---this new address was a humiliation. Supposedly she "collapsed" when she arrived finally....But, we have to watch what we read, especially from stars and famous people. And... The food that she served?...No one would credit her for a sophisticated palate...But that was Joan.....I guess at some time you stop caring----although that was NOT Joan (as Grabo was) because she tried to remain a "star" until the end.....THANK YOU for this post...I just joined the web site, which I believe is enormous...I still am a great fan of Crawford-----but after 38 years, that of the human being and NOT the star.....Raymond Louis Llomparthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17515715768084681355noreply@blogger.com
